September 2020 Wrap Up!

The month of September came ROARING in with a lot of noise. Good noise! Our special guest, Ddrumaddic, led our youth in a Drum Basics class where they learned how to play 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes and 1/16th notes. Everyone pulled out their drumsticks or anything they could get their hands on, and had a blast!
Our Tutoring and College Prep weekly classes for K-12th grade began on September 7th and are expected to continue throughout the school year. In their first 4-week session the young scholars concentrated on Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and Mr. Cesar Chavez. Our older scholars have 6-week sessions and have been concentrating on Ms. Augusta Savage and the Harlem Renaissance period along with writing and college prep classes. Many thanks to Kingdom Industries, Inc. for sponsoring 3 youth for our first session and for joining with BHCFL to ensure any remaining balances in the first session will be fully paid for. Many thanks to Education Revolution for bringing wonderfully engaging educational content to our students.
Our Science & Geography Fair that was delayed for months FINALLY took place! Thank you to the participating families and students! BHCFL presented each participating family with a Geography award, and youth participating in science projects were presented with a certificate and ribbon for their efforts.
This month's **"Be Our Guest" **Speaker was Author of the Swift Walker series & Homeschool Mama, Verlyn Tarlton! We were super excited to hear her talk about her career and drop some jewels on self-sufficiency.
Our Community Service for this month centered on International Coastal Clean-up. Families gathered at the beaches collecting and documenting trash that was littering our coastline. Our community clean-ups will continue throughout the year to make our communities a beautiful place to live in. We are also collecting eyeglasses for the Lion's Club Recycle for Sight program. If you have any eyeglasses hanging around that you no longer use, prescription or sunglasses, please consider donating them to help provide sight to those that can't afford glasses. Walmart and other places around town have receptacles that you can drop them in. Local Lion's Club's also keep a mail drop for glasses at their locations. BHCFL Families also had the opportunity to volunteer at local food banks to give out food.
BHCFL’s Pen Pal Program is off and running! Not only are our members writing one another but some have opted to write the elderly within the community since we can’t visit them or wrap gifts for them this year due to the pandemic. We are looking forward to those special conversations.
Hey! We've adopted a cow! Well, a calf. Still awaiting its birth in November. We’ll keep you updated on how that goes.
Need some extra help in a subject area? Take advantage of this free tutoring and college counseling opportunity through UPchieve. Not only does this apply to our members but we are extending this service to you as well. We were not quite sure how to use this service so we explored it together as a village to see how we could use this opportunity to our benefit. Just sign up and start a chat and see how it goes. Let's get out to vote! Black Homeschoolers of Central Florida, Inc. is a Third Party Voter Registration Organization. That means if you are not registered to vote, we can officially register you and collect voter registration applications. The last day to register to vote in this upcoming election is October 5th. If you haven’t registered to vote, please see us or register online at your Supervisor of Elections website in your local area.
