Homeschooling- What Does It Mean To You? BY Toi Bynes

Image
For us homeschooling means opportunity. We are able to have freedom in what we do, where we go, and just every aspect of learning and living. Homeschooling gives us room to be our true selves. It is a special place for us to grow and learn, as a family, together. Homeschooling means limitless. We are not bound by anything except listening to ourselves and deciding what is or is not for us.

January-February-March Wrap Up!

Although 2020 had us all consumed with overwhelming uncertainty in life, school and work due to the pandemic, there were some highlights.   BHCFL’s annual 3-day Family Retreat Weekend was still able to take place. 80 acres is a beautiful way to socially distance. Our families had a blast camping, having movie night and bonfires, fishing and art, and just getting out in nature and relaxing among God’s Creation.   BHCFL has been a strong support for homeschooling families, and in 2021 we added more ways that we can be of service. In an effort to keep our youth and families engaged, we started a Science Club, Art Club, Youth Toastmasters Club, Parent Book Club, Science National Honor Society Club, and a WISE(Women in Science & Engineering) Club. We even adopted a calf this year named Pumpkin!  These clubs have been so much fun and such a blessing as we laugh and enjoy our brothers and sisters in the BHCFL Village. We are stronger together.

I can’t believe I have spent ten years of my life homeschooling. It’s been quite a journey. The homeschooling lifestyle has given our family so much freedom and opportunity–to make our own schedule, to learn the way that makes sense for us, to bond as a family. And boy, have we had our ups and downs. We’ve changed curricula, tried brick and mortar school, skipped forward grades, and repeated grades. We’ve had periods of total breakdown where we’ve had to just relax on the academics for a few weeks. We’ve weathered hundreds of kid and tantrums and mama tantrums (please tell me I am not the only one who has those). But one thing that has been consistent through it all is our love for reading.  From the preschooler days when the little ones flipped through books, making up the words, to car rides and late nights spent obsessing over a favorite series, I have so many great memories of us reading our way through these homeschool years. I am confident that for all I have gotten and continue

Do Black People Camp? BY: Grovena Haywood-Duke RN, BSN, MSN

Do black people camp? This is a question that I hear all of the time, whether it be asked upon myself, heard in casual conversation, or mentioned in television or movies. If one was to do a quick Google search, you would find a plethora of answers most of which would be stereotypical, offensive, and utterly ridiculous. But overall the answer one would receive to that question would unfortunately, and falsely, be NO! What is camping? According to the Webster’s Dictionary, camping is a place usually away from urban areas where tents or simple buildings (such as cabins) are erected for shelter or for temporary residence. This activity most often takes place outdoors in places such as local/state/national parks, campgrounds, sports arenas, and even your backyard. Camping is considered, by most, a very enjoyable event. It can be undertaken alone in a very serene, anti-stressed, meditative getaway, or experienced with family and friends, and includes time of games, socializing, music,
