  Our BHCFL Village   is a very active and hands-on group and it has taken some creativity to figure out how we will navigate this pandemic and keep our youth learning & growing. So far so good! The month of August turned out to be a great month for us. Thanks to some great community partners like  Microsoft, Publix, Southern Grocers-Winn Dixie, Sam’s Club, and the American Red Cross,    we were able to move forward with the following:  Create our  BHCFL exhibit  at the  Deltona Regional Library  for the month of August. We are honored to have been asked by the library to keep up our exhibit for the month of September as well.  Outdoors and socially distanced, our first event of the year,  The annual  Meet and Greet , was a success!   The month of September came ROARING in with a lot of noise.  Good noise!  Our special guest,  Ddrumaddic , led our youth in a Drum Basics class where they learned how to play 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes and 1/16th notes. Everyone pulled out their drumsticks or anything they could get their hands on, and had a blast! Our Tutoring and College Prep weekly classes for K-12th grade began on September 7th and are expected to continue throughout the school year. In their first 4-week session the young scholars concentrated on Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and Mr. Cesar Chavez. Our older scholars have 6-week sessions and have been concentrating on Ms. Augusta Savage and the Harlem Renaissance period along with writing and college prep classes.  Many thanks to Kingdom Industries, Inc.  for sponsoring 3 youth for our first session and for joining with BHCFL to ensure any remaining balances in the first session will be fully paid for.  Many thanks to Education Revolution ...

                                                                                                              October Wrap Up Starting out the month of October, our BHCFL students enjoyed Orlando Rep’s Broadway on Demand production of   Vote? By Eric Coble   which focused on pivotal moments in history with the Woman's Right to Vote, African-American's Right to Vote, and Young People demanding the Right to Vote. Such a timely production. November Wrap Up The month of November started out with us enjoying the last days of our  BHCFL Family Retreat Weekend!  We are so thankful that we were able to make it happen safely in the midst of a pandemic and not one person that attended got sick. The 4-day event had perfect weather the entire time. We enjoyed tent and rv camping, grilling, gazing at the stars, fishing, games, crafting, nightly movies and bonfires, and enjoying nature and each other. BHCFL’s Family Retreat Weekend was established to deepen the fellowship of our community through shared experiences and to help us focus our energy on village building.  Our students hopped right back into the second session of  BHCFL’s Tutoring and College Preparatory  program which focused on essay writing, SMART goals, financial sourcing methods for college, and time management.   Other classes for the month   included the continuation of our 10-week Marine Science Series hosted by Manatee Lagoon, ...

                           December Wrap Up Our Junior Achievement programs are finally up and running! We have been able to enroll our students in the  JA BizTown  and  JA Finance Park  courses so that they can begin their studies in Financial Literacy. JA BizTown teaches the youth about Community, Economics, Teamwork, Financial Literacy, Work Readiness, Business Management, Entrepreneurship, & Philanthropy. JA Finance Park teaches our youth all aspects of personal finance including learning about balancing a family budget, interest rates, how education affects their earning potential, and how saving today can affect their future. They have virtual simulations on utilizing banking services, purchasing housing, transportation, insurance, furnishings, health care, and other expenses, as well as making investment decisions.They will have the entire semester to navigate through these programs....
